Awards, challenges and competitions

The contest is open for submissions from members of all societies that are member of IUPESM, including undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers from all over the world. Each team must be composed of: one graduate member (as Supervisor) and no more than three team members. Each team must submit a 5-minute video. The contest will be held at IUPESM World Congress organized in Singapore in June 2022.

The Women in Medical and Biological Engineering Committee (WiMBE) is pleased to announce the 5-Minute Video Clip Contest (WiMBE ViContext) at IUPSEM WC2022 in Singapore (12-17 June, 2022) .

The topic chosen is How to Inspire Women to choose Medical & Biology Scientific or Engineering careers.

We want a gender equal society where women feel empowered. Open-mindedness, altruism, courage, compassion, belief in the potential of people, transformation and women empowerment - these are the qualities we want to encourage women to choose to be a scientist or an engineer, however not just any degree but biomedical. Biomedical scientists and engineers directly transform people's lives. Their designs and developments directly impact people and their health and we want those qualities to stand out in the videos.

The contest is open for submissions from members of all societies that are member of IUPESM, including undergraduate and graduate students of all majors, as well as researchers from all over the world. Each team must be composed of: one faculty member (the Supervisor) and no more than three team members.

1. Submission deadline: 30 April 2022 | Submission Link: HERE
   Each submission should include a full video. The Organizing Contest Committee will select the best 5 teams and invite them to participate in the final competition at the IUPSEM WC2022. The five finalist teams will be selected by the Organizing Contest Committee.
2. Final Contest at IUPESM 2022, Conference Dates: 12-17 June 2022

The final ranking will be decided by the Organizing Contest Committee. The awards and final ranking will be announced during the IUPESM congress closure session.

The CED Awards honor those who made exceptional contributions to the Clinical Engineering profession. The Clinical Engineering Division of the IFMBE awards professionals under three categories:

• IFMBE – CED Award
  The award recognizes individuals who demonstrated a significant impact on the Clinical Engineering field, contributed significantly to the development of the CE profession, and whose activities on a national or international organization for CE have been meritorious.
• Clinical Engineering Outstanding Teamwork Award
  The award recognizes an individual or a group that fostered and facilitated cooperation between clinical technology managers and other members of the healthcare field, achieving outstanding impact in clinical engineering.
• Best Clinical Engineering Article and Conference Paper Award
  This award recognizes an individual or group of authors that stood out for writing the best clinical engineering article published in IFMBE journals and proceedings during the previous year. This award specifically aims to encourage the development of clinical engineering as an academic discipline within biomedical engineering.

MBEC Nightingale Award
Alfred Nightingale was editor of the International Federation’s Journal, now published as “Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing” (MBEC). In his memory, a prize was initiated, and it is awarded yearly by the Institute of Physics & Engineering in Medicine and the IFMBE for the best paper in the Federation’s Journal. The prize, EUR 500, shall normally be made annually for the best scientific paper published in each volume of the Journal and awarded jointly to the research team.

MBEC Citation Award
The MBEC Citation Award is presented to author(‘s) of the paper published in the MBEC volume three years ago with the most citations in two subsequent years. The Citation Award to be presented at the World Congress 2022 will be for a paper published in 2019.

MBEC Award for a Young Paper Author
The Award is aimed for the author(s) of the best scientific paper published in the Federation’s Journal by a young first author who made the essential contribution to the publication. The prize, EUR 250, shall normally be made annually for the paper published in the previous year volume of the Journal and shall be awarded to the first author.

Nominations for all MBEC Awards are processed by the IFMBE Federation Journal Committee.

This Award is presented for exceptional contributions to the development of new methods in biomedical engineering. The primary criterion for the JZP is a significant contribution to novel SQUID-based and new generation of sensor developments, and applications in the field of biomagnetism. The award is presented biannually either at the BIOMAG Conferences or during the Biomagnetism Session of the World Congress with a monetary award of 1,000 EUR. The IFMBE would contribute to travel expenses and ask the WC organizers to waive the registration fee for the World Congress. The JZP winner is expected to give an oral presentation of the awarded research during a plenary session.

Nominations for the Award are processed by the organizers of BIOMAG events.

The title of IFMBE Honorary Life Member is bestowed on individuals who have rendered exceptional service to the Federation. Honorary Life members can be nominated at any time. A total of 10 recipients of the IFMBE Honorary Life Member Award are inducted every 3 years during each World Congress. Election for Honorary Members shall be conducted by members of the General Assembly at least 3 months before the IUPESM World Congress.

Health Technology Assessment Division honor those who made exceptional contributions to HTA. The Health Technology Assessment Division of the IFMBE awards professionals under three categories in the field of Health Technology Assessment of medical devices (HTA-MD):

1. HTAD Outstanding Contribution Award for engineering practitioners engineers who has made outstanding contributions to the field of HTA-MD.
2. HTAD Best Paper Award for authors who produced an impactful and outstanding paper in the field of HTA-MD.
3. HTAD Policy Award for Policymakers or stakeholders giving significant contribution to Biomedical Engineering in the field of HTA-MD.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and IFMBE with support of the IFMBE Clinical Engineering Division (CED) made a joint effort to identify innovative health technologies designed and developed by students, researchers, and inventors. There are 4 awards that promote innovative health technologies that address global health concerns that are to be designed, developed, and be affordable for low-resource settings. The intent is to discover promising innovations that can be used to help people in countries that cannot afford to purchase and maintain expensive technologies. The IFMBE and WHO are offering the following 4 prizes:

• Best Medical Device Innovation
• Best Digital Health Innovation
• Best Healthcare Methodology Innovation
• Best Clinical Engineering Innovation.

Besides receipt of awards, the innovation will be included in the WHO compendium series.

The IOMP is pleased to announce the Harold Johns Medal for 2022. This award is established in honour of Harold E. Johns (1915 – 1998), an eminent medical physicist. It recognises scientists who have distinguished themselves by their contributions through excellence in teaching and contributions to international education.

The Harold Johns Medal will be given at the IUPESM World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering 2022 in Singapore, 12 – 17 June 2022.

This award consists of an IOMP Medal, modest travel funds to attend the IUPESM WC 2022 and additionally a short biography of the awardee will be published in the IOMP Newsletter “Medical Physics World”.

This award is established to honour scientists who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to the education and training of medical physicists, medical students, medical residents, and allied health personnel, advancement of medical physics knowledge and advancement of the medical physics profession.

The Marie Sklodowska-Curie Award will be given at the IUPESM World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering 2022 in Singapore, 12 – 17 June 2022.

The Marie Sklodowska-Curie Award consists of a bronze plaque, modest travel funds to attend the IUPESM WC 2022 and additionally a short biography of the awardee will be published in the IOMP Newsletter “Medical Physics World”.

The IFMBE Young Investigator Competition (YIC) is organized annually to recognize excellence in conference contributions whose primary authors are young investigators (persons under the age of 35). Ten finalists of the YIC will be announced before the beginning of the Congress and based on the evaluation of presentations of their research at the Congress, the YIC committee will decide on the competition winners. The awardees in 2022 will receive prize money at the World Congress 2022 where the award will be presented.

The International Academy for Medical and Biological Engineering (IAMBE) announces four IAMBE Early Career Awards for Young Faculty / Research Institution members (Assistant Professor or equivalent Research Institution / Industry position).

The Awards, highlighting the successful onset of an academic career, are associated with world regions as follows:

• North America
• South America
• Europe / Near East / Africa
• Far East / Australia / New Zealand

For each region, there will be one Award (€2000). The Award will be presented at the 2022 World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering in Singapore (June 12 - 17).

The Award documents the commitment of IAMBE to support and encourage promising young researchers at an already advanced, but not (yet) tenured level in view of a successful and fruitful further academic career. Likewise, young researchers in private research institutions or industry research groups are envisaged. In so doing, IAMBE intends to strengthen the long-term basis and development of BME at the university as well as at the private research institution/industry level.

The Challenge aims to encourage the development of algorithms for early predict dropouts, with the objective of minimizing adherence problems that can compromise the impact of healthcare digital solutions in elderly users observing the application’s measurements, usage patterns and evaluation results.

The challenge award is 1000€ and best submitted solutions shall be discussed at the IUPESM World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering in Singapore (June 12 - 17).

The IFMBE Toh Siew Lok BME Student Design Award competition is jointly organized by the National University of Singapore (NUS) MedTech, the Biomedical Engineering Society (Singapore) and the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering, in memory of the late Professor Toh Siew Lok who has been a significant driving force behind the continual push for student education and innovation in biomedical engineering.

Theme of Competition
The focus of the competition is the design of appropriate technology to improve healthcare in resource-scarce communities. The designs will be judged according the following four criteria:
(a) Innovativeness; (b) Potential benefit(s) to healthcare in resource-scarce communities; (c) Low cost and ease of deployment and (d) Viability of the design and potential in reaching the market.

Eligibility
All team members must be bona-fide students at the time of World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering (WC 2022). The projects must have been carried out in the students‘ institutions. Number of members per team can be up to 6.

Competition Format
Five (5) submissions will be shortlisted for the competition. All shortlisted submissions will be required to present and demonstrate their design during the WC 2022.

Awards
Cash prizes plus certificates will be awarded to the 5 finalists. In addition, the registration fees for the finalists will be reimbursed by the IFMBE.

Applications are to be made online via the online application form found here.
Submissions must include (a) a 3-minute video, (2) a 10-page report of letter/A4 size and font size 12, and (3) a letter of certification by your faculty advisor.

The IOMP is pleased to announce the IUPESM Award of Merit in Medical Physics 2022. IUPESM honours with its Awards of Merit a medical physicist and a biomedical engineer who have established distinguished careers in their field. The IOMP Awards and Honours Committee is delighted to act as the IOMP Sub-committee. The Awards Committee is responsible for the selection of the medical physicist to be recommended to IUPESM for consideration of the award. The IUPESM Award of Merit in Medical Physics 2022 will be presented at the IUPESM World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering 2022 in Singapore, 12 – 17 June 2022. click here.

The Award will include the IOMP certificate, travel funds to attend the IUPESM WC 2022 and the opportunity to make a presentation on the awardee’s scientific and professional contributions to medical physics. In addition, a short biography of the awardee will be published in “Medical Physics World”.

• The recipient should have made a significant impact in the science and scientific practice of medical physics
• The recipient should have participated meritoriously in national and international organizations for medical physics and have significantly influenced the development of the profession of medical physics.
• The award may be received only one time by any individual.
• Nominee shall not be a current member of the IOMP Awards & Honours Committee or the IOMP ExCom.

• The award will be advertised by the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP) on the organization’s website: http://www.iomp.org
• Self-nominations will not be considered.
• Nominations can be made to the Chair of the IOMP Awards and Honours Committee (AHC) by IOMP National Member Organizations (NMO) or individuals through their NMO. Where this is not possible, applications should be made directly to the Chair of the AHC. They should include the following:
  1. Curriculum vitae, not exceeding two pages and a copy of the five most important publications. A one-page write-up of the significant contributions made in relation to the criteria stated above.

The closing date for nominations is noon (EST) on 21st November 2021. Nominations should be sent to Dr Simone Kodlulovich Renha at simone@cnen.gov.br. Submissions should be in the form of a MS Word or PDF document. Nominations will be acknowledged by e-mail.
